Schoolhouses like this one once stood in every corner of Michigan, including one on a hilltop not a quarter mile from the house where I was born. Classes were held with a single teacher, who taught all grades, who in turn taught each other, and all were from the same local neighborhood and therefore closely related. My cousins attended such a school, and my "Aunt Mary" Ackerman taught them. I would have attended, too, but our family "left the farm" the first year I attended elementary school, and I missed the experience.

Mary will be very glad of your comment! What do I think of Mary? She is well-known but perhaps not yet "famous". She is an excellent photographer, a creative artist, and a poetic writer. Mary's mantra is always, "What is art, and how do I achieve it?" (She is also something of a perfectionist!)

Thanks so much Miss Yves and Mr Nerd for your nice comments, and thank you Imperfect for posting my picture. I really appreciate it.

I am a local artist in the Detroit area. I used to be much more well-known when I lived in Upstate NY where I had a number of shows. I have yet to have one here.

I love your barn shots, too... you can tell I'm a nut for things like me... old, worn, and grey.

This stands out in black and white. Nice.

Time seems to bleach the color from our environment in some things... the brilliance of youth gives way to the grey of age... but the form and figure of what was is still there... even if only as bleached bones and shanks of hair.
